ABOUT THE PROCESS

For the Series, I use geological maps and make geological investigations of the related mountain. Then I plan my hiking route with the aim, to collect a stone from each geological layer. Loaded up with a bunch of gear, I start my hiking trip. Located by GPS and equipped with an ice axe, I begin with the shallow level mining. Stones get stored and named in bags. Back home in my atelier, the reduction process starts. First, I reduce the size of the stones with hammer and bit, later on with a mortar. At the end, the stone powder has to be sieved with a 100-micron mesh sieve. The stone becomes now the size of pigments. For the use of painting, the pigments get mixed with acrylic binder.

For the singles, I just pick up interesting looking stones while I am hiking instead of studying geological maps in advance. Singles are named with the name of the stone, the location and year I found them.
